HitchHiker systems – Globally distributed computing for pennies

In this talk I’ll outline a system built using Azure serverless functions and durable orchestration and event grid, the CQRS architecture and with the underlying entity storage being by event sourcing. The prototype shows how this allows you to assemble a highly performant, geographically distributed system which scales up and down rapidly for an extremely small cost.

Includes discussion of the technology choices and the lessons learned.

Objective of the talk

Introduce the architectural concepts (CQRS and event sourcing) then show how the technologies of Azure storage, event grid and durable function orchestration can be used to assemble a serverless system that scales to meet demand but has a very low operating cost.
